Day 398

Going to church let’s you now if you’re on the right track or not – that’s what I learned today

It’s 7: 27 PM on day 398 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself cassava and chutney for breakfast, go to church,  publish my Kid of the Week  feature,  prepare and publish my Disability of the Day,  type up one more page for my mother – I have now earned R719 for my campaign – feed myself chicken biryani for lunch,  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck  – and  feed myself  yoghurt for dinner

Today while at church I heard we all have dual citizenship we are citizen of the countries we live in and citizens of the kingdom of God the reverend went on to say that we should shift our mindset from one of ownership – being possessive of our resources – to one of custodianship – acknowledging that whatever we have we have been given to use in service of God and doing as such – which resonated with me because I had felt that way from the moment I started making money of my own and acted on it by donating 25% of my first paycheck to various charities that being said I don’t believe people should nominate me for sainthood or anything of the sort I yell, I scream, I curse, in short I am just an ordinary woman who prides herself on going the extra mile. Day 377

The best gift you can give your children is something that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives – that’s what I learned today

It’s 9: 49 PM on day 377 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, drink coffee in a glass, go to church with my mother, sister and brother–the sermon was entitled When your ‘yes’ means nothing it was about the importance of  keeping your word and having the humility to admit you’re wrong when you are wrong – feed myself All-Bran Flakes for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature, feed myself rice and curry for lunch, prepare and publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck  okay to be truthful I only tweeted once the whole day the rest was automated by me last night–  finish reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – it was AWESOME it had everything I’ve ever wanted in a book… action, adventure and romance I can’t wait to finish reading the whole series – go to drop my grandma off at my uncle’s house – she was with us while my uncle and his wife were out of town anyway while we were there our priest popped by and my dad made a fau paux he bolted for the door before the priest had a chance to pray (Indian priests always pray when people leave to go somewhere regardless of the distance) luckily he said let’s pray before my dad stepped out the door –  and brush my teeth once more.

Today while at church I thought for all my mother’s faults she gave me Jesus and because of that I never felt like a fatherless child even though my father is a class A jerk – he has made it abundantly clear through his actions that although he may love me he is also ashamed of me because I have Cerebral Palsy – and to her I say thank you mommy. What have been the best gifts that your parents have passed onto you?

Day 363

Going to church doesn’t make you a better person – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 7: 00 PM on day 363 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, publish my Kid of the Week feature, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich and scrambled eggs for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – watch The Rugby World Cup match: South Africa vs. Wales–we won by a point– set a timeline to do the things I need to do to become phyically independent– I gave myself two months to accomlish the difficult tasks and  two weeks to accomplish the “easy” tasks  (see below)–   feed myself rice and chicken biryaanii for lunch, continue reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, exercise for a few minutes, feed myself oranges for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

This morning my mother came into our room and asked us if we wanted to go to church today and my sister and I both said no I could hear the disappointment in her voice so I said it’s what you do outside of the church that matters and that I guess is my message to you guys if you pray –to your God – read your holy book as often as you can, give with whole heart and treat everybody with kindness it doesn’t matter if you go to your place of worship every week. Do you go to church just to say you did?

Timeline to complete all the things I need to do to become physically independent

 To brush my teeth – partially achieved – I can brush my teeth just fine but I need someone to help me lean over the sick so that the toothpaste ends up in the sink and not all over my shirt ‘[MUST BE achieved two Sunday’s from now (October 2, 2011)]

 To sign my name on a document (I never write anything out I always use a computer/laptop) – achieved sort of/needs more practice – I signed for my debit card and it was accepted but when I signed to renew my passport it was denied [MUST BE achieved two Sunday’s from now (October 2, 2011)]

 To type with both hands – needs more practice – I have been typing with only my left hand so long that it’s hard to break [MUST BE achieved two Sunday’s from now (October 2, 2011)]

 To eat and drink by myself – partially achieved/needs more practice – I can feed myself with a spoon and drink from a mug but feeding myself with a fork and knife and drinking from a glass (because it has no handle) is still difficult [MUST BE achieved two Sunday’s from now (October 2, 2011)]

 To push myself around on my wheelchair – needs more practice most of the time I’m too lazy so I ask my family to wheel me around ‘[MUST BE achieved in the next two months (November 11, 2011)]

 To get in and out of bed by myself – not yet attempted because my parents are always around and even if they weren’t I would be too afraid to try because I fall and break my bones ‘[MUST BE achieved in the next two months (November 11, 2011)]

 To go to the bathroom by myself– again not yet attempted because my parents are always around and even if they weren’t I would be too afraid to try because I fall and break my bones ‘[MUST BE achieved in the next two months (November 11, 2011)]

 To bathe myself – attempted/needs more practice – I tried two days ago when my mother was in the hospital with my brother but since I can’t bend my back because there’s a metal rod in it – I had Scoliosis – that proved to be difficult ‘[MUST BE achieved in the next two months (November 11, 2011)]

 To undress and redress myself – attempted/needs more practice – sometimes I can only get one hand out a sleeve other times it’s both and on a really good I can take my whole shirt off ‘[MUST BE achieved in the next two months (November 11, 2011)]

Day 319

We are not human beings we are human becomings – that’s what I learned today

It’s 8: 24 PM on day 319 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, clean myself –  my mother wasn’t here so I had to do it myself which is a good thing I suppose – feed myself Chapati for breakfast,  tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck today but my cousin and her husband made a second combined dination of $200 yesterday although I wasn’t able to appreciate the gift fully at the time because I couldn’t stop thinking about my brother I miss the little guy hopefully God will take my good deeds into account and make him feel better soon  – feed myself rice and curry for lunch hang out with my mom– she came back home to  change – feed myself oranges for dinner,  brush my teeth once more, go with my father to drop my mother back off at the hospital and watch TV.

Today because my mother was in the hospital with my brother I had to do everything virtually by myself and I was struggling to put on my t-shirt I realized that it was okay that I could only get one sleeve of my shirt off because maybe tomorrow I could take them both off and eventually undress and redress myself and that I guess is my message to all of you accept yourself where you are and be grateful for all you can do. Are you stuck in the mud or constantly becoming more of who you are?

Day 307

It’s 8: 28 PM on day 307 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself Batura and potato for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature – this week’s Kid of the Week is 7 year-old Dominic Geragi (@Domsters101) who is passionate about animal welfare and keeping the environment clean – feed myself oranges for lunch, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck I have a good mind to donate my own money in fact I think I will as soon as it appears in my bank account – read Fading Twilight on writteningold – a blog post which reviewed the four books of the Twilight Saga – I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about reading the series – and Mommy Is A Poopiehead: the speech program on Love That Max – a blog post about doing whatever works to make sure your chldren get where they need to be– feed myself whole-graiin bread and beef fry for dinner, pray with my family – the whole time my father was prayng and reading the bible I kept thinking hypocrite (see why below)– and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday while on the way to have dinner at our cousin’s house my mother told us that there were going to be some people we didn’t know there and she went on to say that we should make a point of greeting them only when we got there my father didn’t see t fit that I greet the aunty so I greeted her husband – there was no way my father could hide me from him because he was sitting in the living room when we arrived – and went to hang out with the kids not thinking much of it until I woke up this morning knowing deep down inside that I shouldn’t let anything I’m going through bother me because I would one day meet presidents and make a HUGE difference in the world. Do you blame everybody for the state that your life is in not knowing that you are the master of your own destiny?

Day 298

Agreeing to disagree is the only way you can be a creator of world peace – that’s what I learned today

It’s 8: 59 PM on day 298 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, watch TV, feed myself leftovers from the barbecue for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – feed myself rice and curry lunch,go to physiotherapy – the thirty minutes flew by in the blink of an eye –watch some more TV, feed myself Chapati and fish curry for dinner and brush my teeth once.

Yesterday I tweeted Hello World What are you grateful for today? I am grateful that I see God in everybody and everything and David (@DavetheAtheist) replied Check your vision. Sounds like you’re hallucinating. #atheism to which I said With all due respect I disagree with you and he responded Doesn’t change facts which led to us having a heated back a forth conversation which ended with him saying What an observation. So do you, it’s just a shame that you refuse to accept truth. – I had said that he had a right to his beliefs – and to that I say there is not just one truth but six billion – one for every human being on this planet. Do you have enough faith in your beliefs to be around people who openly disagree with you?

Day 297

A few hours can make a huge difference – that’s what I learned today.

It’s 7: 29 PM on day 297 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself leftovers from last night’s barbecue for breakfast, watch TV, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – listen to music, tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck – and feed myself rice and curry for dinner.

Last night while listening to music I thought that the best way for me to pray was through my actions but today as I awoke to the overpowering smell of urine – my grandma had urinated on our bedroom floor yesterday morning – I realized that there was nothing I could do to fix her so I prayed Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. for ever and ever. Amen. I am sorry for every bad thing I’ve ever done please help my grandma surely all my good deeds count for something. Has a few hours changed your whole life?

It’s 6: 29 PM on day 293 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck – publish my Kid of the Week feature, read And I’m falling on Outrageous Fortune – a blog post about a mother’s shattered expectations – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more – still no luck – feed myself avocado on whole-grain bread for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

Yesterday I really needed to know that my life would work out and somehow or another I stumbled onto Worth the Wait (see video below) by 33 Miles – a Christian rock band – which made me feel like God was talking directly to me and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you God I heard you. Has a coincidence ever given you reassurance?

Each one of us are God’s representatives – that’s what I learned today

It’s 7: 50 PM on day 279 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, go to church – the sermon was entitled The Spirit of Truth and was all about how you can’t walk in God’s light if you’re dishonest – feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, publish my Kid of the Week feature, feed myself French fries for lunch, read The Importance of Value by Veronica (@VeronicaSchultz)– a blog post about the fact that you can change your reality just by changing what you say to yourself – and The Big Bad Baby Post by Katy (@birdonthestreet) – a blog post about two two new lives that have recently entered our world :) –   tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign – no luck– feed myself rice and curry  for dinner and brush my teeth once more.

I woke up today having made up my mind that I wouldn’t wish my father a happy father’s day because quite frankly I didn’t think he deserved it but after hearing ⁸ Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” ⁹ Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. ¹¹ Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.– John 14: 8-11 – I realized that I should be the bigger person and wished him a happy father’s day as soon as I got back from church. Your appreciation of something is directly proportional to how hard you had to work to have/do it – that what I learned today

It’s 7: 32 PM on day 246 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself a chicken hotdog for breakfast, tweet about my Clean Water For All Campaign –no luck – feed myself rice and curry for lunch, tweet about my campaign some more –still no luck – watch TV and brush my teeth once more.

Today I was struggling, struggling, struggling to hold onto my lunchbox with my right-hand while feeding myself breakfast with the left and in that moment I realized that God actually did me a favour by giving me this disability because most people hold and pick up things without a second thought whereas, every time I do any of those things I feel like I’ve won the Nobel Prize. Do you not appreciate your abilities because you can do everything so easily?
